Designing the hospital of the future.

Conducting field research and interviews gave me insight into doctor's and nurse's workflows, pain points, and challenges. A team of nurses at a children's hospital used their personal cell phones and paper as work arounds to process sensitive work orders. Also, documentation in emergency rooms pose additional challenges due to the priority of cases. A trauma team member used printed templates to take notes as the rest of the team shouted information while stabalizing the patient.
Doctors and nurses spend more than 50% of their time using eletronic health records.
Nurses use paper and pen to keep track of patient information.
Hospital use a number of systems that are not interoperable creating work inefficiencies.
We discovered plenty of problems to tackle. I created storyboards to help illustrate the challenges users face. This helped us develop solutions we wanted to pursue and determine our strategy.
